Fluid balance and dehydration management

Horses that are training intensively lose large amounts of fluids and electrolytes through sweat. Sweat in horses is hypertonic (has a higher concentration of salts than blood plasma), so if they have lost a lot of electrolytes, drinking water without salts will only dilute the body's fluids even more, which can lead the horse to stop drinking (this is called pseudo-dehydration). Electrolyte supplementation after heavy exercise is not only a prevention of dehydration, but also an essential measure to maintain the horse's athletic form, prevent health problems and ensure its well-being during intensive training.
